Zambezi man seeks asylum in Botswana
The Deputy Chairperson of the Caprivi Concerned Group who is said to have gone missing recently, allegedly applied for political asylum at Maun Police Station in Botswana the police has said. Nampol yesterday called press conference to make the announcing that Matemwa Retief Kangongo is currently held at Francis Centre for Illegal Immigrants in Botswana. The news follows allegations that Kangongo went missing after threats from the Namibian police.
Police spokesperson Edwin Kanguatjivi said all indications are that Kangongo will likely not be granted the asylum sought.
“It is in light of the above that I call this briefing in order to dispel any myth about the alleged disappearance under mysterious circumstances that in some way implicated the Inspector-General of the Namibian Police Force,” Kanguatjivi said.
At the same press conference, Kanguatjivi announced that two police officers, Warrant officer Ananias Shivute Iita and Sergeant Erwin Kavela Nestor were arrested in Ongwediva last Friday on charges of soliciting bribes. The two appeared in the Oshakati Magistrates Court on Monday and were granted bail of N$1000 each. Although not wanting to divulge much, the two apparently stopped a man on a motorbike, and the motorbike is said to not be road worthy and the driver was without a license, which Kanguatjivi says is where the extortion allegedly started.
“The Namibian police have noticed with concern of smses in the newspaper about police officers soliciting bribes, and we advise that such information should be forwarded to respective regional commanders, or you can make use of our suggestion boxes country wide in order for such offenders to be brought to book,” he said.
In other crime related news this week, on Tuesday morning, a 25 year hanged himself in Windhoek. The man who was identified as Donald Mackey Dreyer and hanged himself with a rope in Wanaheda. No suicide note was found and police expects no foul play is suspected. Also on Wednesday between 11:00 and 12:00 at Michelle McLean road in Cimbebasia a Toyota Land Cruiser and a motorbike collided head on. The driver of the motorbike died at the scene.
