Young Warriors crash out

Namibia’s Young Warriors lost 2-0 against South Africa on Saturday to crash out of the 2017 CAF U-20 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.This was the second round of the second leg with the match played at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.The first leg had ended 0-0 in Windhoek a fortnight ago.The visitors were on the back foot from the start and only came into the game after 15 minutes, managing to have possession in the opposition half against South Africa.But it was not too long before SuperSport United striker Fagrie Lakay scored from the penalty spot on 25 minutes which was awarded after Warriors defender Baloyi Tsandib was judged to have handled the ball in the box. Goalkeeper Mirko Wolff was close but yet too far to keep the spot out as South Africa took the lead.Baloyi was then substituted with an ankle injury after an awful fall after going for a header attacking a corner kick for the Namibians. Petrus Kamati came for Tsandib and did a decent job at the back but South Africa was not to be disturbed in their play as they have more movement on the ball in midfield and pushed for a 1-0 halftime lead.In the second half, Namibia came out better and McCartney Nawaseb ballooned one over the top after finding space in the box. Player maker Venovineja Tjikundi had to leave the field due to an ankle injury with Anthony Kham coming on for him. Reggie Willemse also made way for Boni Paulino Junior as Namibia looked to create chances for themselves.SA finally made it 2-0 through Liam Jordan of Bidvest Wits as Kham lost the ball and South Africa’s counter attack was deadly and produced the second goal.“We worked hard and tried our best. But a handful of players did not come to the party and that was our down fall. “I’m sad we are out this way. It’s now time to rest but not too much as we have Cosafa cup later in the year. “We have a great bunch of promising players and we need to work hard in order to get the best out of them,” Namibia coach Gerald Güther says. South Africa will now battle either Mozambique or Lesotho for a ticket to the tournament, which is taking place in Zambia in February/March 2017.NFA.ORG.NA
