World Walking Day observed at Keetmanshoop

About 50 people at Keetmanshoop on Sunday took part in the first-ever Namibia World Walking Day.
This year the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC), in conjunction with the Namibia Women in Sport Association (NAWISA), joined The Association for International Sport for All (TAFISA) in taking part in World Walking Day.
The walk started at 10:00 at the Keetmanshoop Westdene Stadium and the group covered a distance of 10 km.
Participant Delri Stoffel said she came to realise that there are health benefits to walking. The walk also presented a platform for her to meet new people.
“My encouragement to others out there is that they should take part in such events; it is interesting, you get to meet new people and it was fun. It was not easy but we pushed each other and encouraged one another and we made it,” said Stoffel.
Young and old join for fun
Twelve-year-old Lerato Mokwena said: “It was an interesting thing for me, all of us need an outing, to go out, because most of us are just sitting at home doing nothing, we also need to exercise to stay fit and just to come together as a community and have fun. As for the walk it was nice, my body was refreshed and I think I should do it more often.”
The sport development officer at the NSC, Timotheus Tiboth, was disappointed with the low turnout, but was quick to express gratitude towards those who participated in the walk.
“I encourage the community to participate in such events and to the organisers in future, let us see if we can bring such events closer to the community or if not, at least let us organise transport for the people, but all in all it was a success, I'm satisfied,” he said.
The walk took place in four regions - Kunene, Ohangwena, Zambezi and //Karas.
