Women’s Super League to kick off this weekend
The second edition of the Namibia Football Association’s (NFA) Women Super League (WSL) was launched yesterday in Windhoek.
The launch was held at the NFA Football House.
Matches are set to start this Saturday at the NFA Technical Centre in Katutura. The league is back after the inaugural event was held in Windhoek in 2011.
This season the league will be ‘bigger and better’ as the teams have increased to 12 from the six competitive teams which featured in the first edition. The increase in teams has been necessitated because of an increase of interest following the TN Mobile CAF Women’s Championship that was held in Windhoek last year. The WSL Chairperson Jackey Gertze said that the league will see the best performers selected to represent the Brave Gladiators. “The main objective in establishing the league is to make sure that all the national teams players are playing in the same league from Under-17 till the senior teams,” said Gertze.
“The league can give the chance to players so that they can join the girl’s national team and U-17 team that will play Botswana in November away in the Women’s World Cup qualifiers.”
Gladiators coach, Jacqueline Shipanga said that they are thankful to FIFA for what they are doing. “FIFA wants to come in again for the funding and equipment like football boots for the players,” Shipanga stated.
Shipanga also urged other sponsors to come on board while thanking NFA president Frans Mbidi for supporting the league.
JS Academy, who is now known as Tura Magic Ladies, were the champions of the inaugural league.
Emma Naris, who now plays for the Gladiators, was Young Player of the Season while Lovisa Mulunga was crowned Player of the Season. Agnes Kauzuu was awarded the Goalkeeper of the Season award. Elmari ‘Kleintjie’ Fredericks took the Top Goal Scorer honour.
