WMC ready to host Total Tara Rally
This year's 50th edition of the Total Tara Rally will probably be the biggest road race event of the year in Namibia, says Windhoek Motor Club (WMC) chairperson Richard Slamet.
Slamet said that Total Namibia has availed N$150 000 for the event, which will start on 8 November in Swakopmund.
Drivers will make their way towards Wilhelmstal in the Karibib area the following day. “On 10 November, they will make their way to Windhoek,” he said.
He added the WMC is working on strengthening its relationship with Total going forward.
In 2016 Total Namibia announced it was withdrawing its sponsorship for the rally, which at that time was N$500 000.
The company said it was a business decision, but the withdrawal followed controversy during the 2015 rally, which was won by Slamet and Wiets Coetzee. Second-placed finishers Wilro Dippenaar and Riaan van der Westhuizen withdrew out of protest over what they said were officiating inconsistencies.
Total Namibia later conducted an investigation and declared the results of the 2015 rally null and void.
