WHS Smart Board Project

Life is not what you get, but what you give. It is also true in a school setup: are you just there for what the school can give you or are you there to make a difference? To contribute without being asked? Sybrand de Waal, a grade 10 student of WHS, came to hear that the Windhoek International School is selling their second-hand SMART Boards for next to nothing. With Sybrand’s interest in technology, he immediately saw an opportunity not to be missed to advance the teaching methods at WHS through technology. He convinced 10 teachers of the necessity of the SMART Boards, and how smart it really is. It is applaudable that these 10 teachers bought the boards out of their own pockets for their classes. On Friday, 21 August all the boards and projectors were transported to WHS, and on Saturday 22 August 10 classes became instantly smart, with the help of Mrs Burger, her family, Sybrand and his dad. It was a lot of measuring, drilling, fisher plugs, ladders, screws and hanging of the boards and projectors. Sybrand also presented the teachers with a lesson in smartness, how to use the boards and utilise it to its fullest potential. It seems that he is now the smart technician at WHS, making sure that all the mechanical and computer details work like clockwork. (A smart board, is a large, touch-controlled screen that works with a projector to provide users with a larger version of their computer screen. The SMART Board has a touch-controlled screen that works in conjunction with a projector and a computer. Used in over three million classrooms globally, SMART Board interactive displays are purpose-built to support teaching approaches that affect learning outcomes. )
