Welwitschias ravaged by Leopards
The Windhoek Draught Welwitschias succumbed to their seventh loss when they went down 42-17 to the Leopards in the Currie Cup qualifiers.
The match took place at Olen Park in Potchefstroom on Friday.
Leopards’ win saw them inching closer to qualifying for the Premier League of the Currie Cup.
They now occupy eighth spot while the Welwitschias are glued to the bottom of the log and are yet to win a match.
According to SupaRugby, Leopards were convincing in their victory over their Namibian side.
Six tries, of which five were scored by Rhyno Smith and his backline were the tonic for victory for the South African club.
The star for the Leopards was their centre Henko Marais, who scored the best try of the day.
He was also quite effective when entering into tackles.
Marais and his centre partner Johan Deysel, who played for Namibia at the 2015 Rugby World Cup, made their mark on the game early when they combined for a tackle on JC Greyling.
Thereafter it proved easy for Marais to spread panic in the Welwitschias ranks with the Namibian side’s attackers wary of the centre.
Marais’ try came after Benhard van Rensburg found a gap in the Welwitschias back line before passing to Jaco Jordaan, who in turn found the centre.
Bradley Moolman also joined in the heroics as he scored a beauty of try by rounding off a move that Smith started from about 50 metres.
Rowayne Beukman scored the first and last tries of the match as the Leopards won their third match of the qualifiers.
While the Welwitschias were able to match the Leopards in the scrums, this was undone as they made too many basic errors.
Lock Denzil van Wyk nonetheless scored a brilliant try to add to another one scored by Francois Wiese.
Shaun Kaizemi converted on both occasions and also nailed a penalty for the Welwitschias’ point count.
The Welwitschias will next host the Down Touch Griffons at the Hage Geingob Stadium on 28 May.
