Welwitschias plan for 2019 Currie Cup win

Windhoek Draft Welwitschias coach Lyn Jones says he is not focusing on winning the Currie Cup for the next two years.

Jones says he is developing the young team for the future and that includes winning the Currie Cup in 2019.

The team went down 50 – 33 to the Falcons in Kempton Park in South Africa last weekend after dominating the first half.

Jones spoke at a rugby meeting in Windhoek yesterday where he expressed satisfaction with the way the players had performed despite the loss.

“Lack of fitness hampered the team but they were the better team on the day. “We analysed the way we played and though we made mistakes, we dominated in the first half. Due to lack of match fitness and unpreparedness we lost the game. But that is expected if one is playing against full-time rugby players,” he said.

The team now looks forward to a good display of rugby on Saturday when they face the Blue Bulls.

Jones said their opponents have a fine tradition and history and they were excited to host them. He added that if the team improved from last weekend's loss, it would make him happy.

“Success has a plan and we are working together as a young team of coaches and players to achieve more. The only thing which will stop us is our fitness, but there is no doubt that we will win the match,” he said.

Asked if there would be any changes to the squad, he said no.

“We doubt that we will make any changes in the squad because we want to give the players a second chance and develop a pattern of play. What is important for us is to use experienced players because we don't have enough time.”

JP Nell, assistant coach of the Welwitschias, said the Blue Bulls would come with a young team with a lot of student influence.

“These guys are not afraid to play rugby. It is up to us to prepare well and to go into the game with the right mental attitude,” he said.

The weekend's squad is as follows:

Heinrich Smith, David Phillander, Lesley Klim, Gino Wilson, JC Greyling, Francois Wiese, Darryl de la Harpe, Aurelio Plato, Theuns Kotze, Eugene Jantjies, Cameron Klassen, Andries Rossow, Collen Smith, AJ de Kerk, Christo McNish, Shaun du Preez, Gerard Lotter, Munio Kasiringua, Mahepsia Tjeriko, Ruan Ludick, Victor Rodriquez, Leneve Damens, Thomasau Forbes and Rohan Kitshoff.
