Welwitschias get World Cup experience boost
The Windhoek Draught Welwitschias, who are due to face the Leopards in Potchefstroom at 19:00 this evening, will be able to call upon two players that featured at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
Prop Casper Viviers, who plays as a professional in France, is one of the first arrivals for Namibia’s participation in next month’s World Rugby Nations Cup that is due to take place in Romania. It will be his first match in the Currie Cup qualification tournament.
Outside centre JC Greyling also makes a return after being side lined for two matches following a rib injury.
Coach John Williams has had to make a few changes to his team in order to rotate his players and the likes of Arthur Bouwer, Darryl de la Harpe, Malcolm Moore and Riaan van Zyl will be rested.
Other changes see flanker Joe Hermann, fly half Shawn Kaizemi and winger Russel van Wyk returning to the starting line-up.
The result is that the Welwitschias will have no less than seven members of the 2015 Rugby World Cup in the starting line-up.
Meanwhile, Leopards will field two Namibians in Johan Deysel and Chukkie van der Westhuizen during this encounter.
The South African team is resting a number of their Varsity Cup stars.
This means that regular captain Jeandré Rudolph, prop Walt Steenkamp, loose head prop Mash Mafela and hooker Wilmar Arnoldi will get a chance to recharge their batteries.
Fullback Rhyno Smith will take over captaincy of the Leopards team.
The Welwitschias next home match will see them hosting the Griffons at the Hage Geingob Stadium on 28 May.
