Welwitschias battle Bulls
There will be no reprieve for the Windhoek Draught Welwitschias, after being hammered last week by the Valke, as they take on the mighty Blue Bulls tomorrow in Pretoria.
Namibia's second tier rugby side, the Windhoek Draught Welwitschias, will tomorrow return to action when they lock horns with the Vodacom Blue Bulls at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, South Africa.
This is the Welwitschias second match of the season in the SuperSport Rugby Challenge, which kicked off last weekend.
The Welwitschias lost 39-7 against a more organised Valke side at the Sam Nujoma Stadium last week.
The Hino Valke scored six tries on their way to a comprehensive victory.
Friedle Olivier from the Valke, who was the man of the match last weekend, said it was a very physical match.
“Everyone put in great effort. I have to congratulate the Namibian team as well as they have improved a lot since the competition started. They will cause a lot of upsets in the tournament.”
Welwitschias coach Lyn Jones said the team has a long way to go in the competition.
“I'm happy to see that the team is at least 10 times better than they were last year in terms of performance; technical improvements are still needed if were are to realise their goal of winning one or two games in the competition.” The Windhoek Draught Welwitschias are drawn in the Northern group of the competition and are facing the likes of the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions and Pumas. Namibia endured a tough competition last year, as they only secured one win from their eight matches, and this year they are hoping to perform a little better.
Young players are expected to feature in most matches, in order to give them experience and exposure. The SuperSport Rugby Challenge is the secondary domestic rugby union competition in South Africa and the long-term successor of the Vodacom Cup competition.
The competition is organised by the South African Rugby Union (SARU) and features all 14 South African provincial unions plus the Welwitschias.
The match against the Blue Bulls kicks off at 14:30.
A possible Welwitschias starting line-up is as follows:
Collen Smith, Shaun du Preez, Andries Rousseau, Ruan Ludick, Max Katjijeko, Rohan Kitshoff, Thomasau Forbes, Victor Rodrigues, Eugene Jantjies (captain), Theuns Kotze, Gino Wilson, Darryl de la Harpe, JC Greyling, Lesley Klim, David Philander.
