Wanted: Dynamic diplomats
President Hage Geingob is expected to announce new ambassadorial positions in the coming weeks. It is speculated that among those earmarked for postings are incumbent Oshana governor Clemens Kashuupulwa, former National Council chairperson Asser Kapere and former presidency spokesperson Albert Aochamub. Over the years there has been little focus on the area of diplomacy and positioning Namibia to make headway in the affairs of the world. Namibia therefore needs a serious overhaul of its foreign policy to be able to champion regional and specifically continental development. Ambassadorial positions are critical postings and require dynamic diplomats to fight for our nation and position in a global battle for resources. We should not treat them as retirement villages through cadre deployment. Our foreign missions need an injection of energy and President Geingob has been presented with the perfect opportunity to do what is right and appoint strategic personnel in these roles. World powers like China have placed a high priority on foreign policy by appointing dynamic and young diplomats to defend their interests abroad. They are doing so effectively, even here in Namibia. We should take a stand in the interest of our country’s future and stop putting old wine into new bottles.
