Vries finds home at Swallows
GladAfrica Championship side Swallows FC have afforded a former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper a chance to resurrect his career.
Namibian goalkeeper Virgil Vries and former Cape Town City and Free State Stars attacker Sibusiso Masina have both penned nine-month deals with the Dube Birds.
Vries, 28, joined Amakhosi in 2018 but found fellow Itumeleng Khune's gloves too big to fill as he made blunders in high-profile matches.
“Where do you get that now? I see you have scorpions now,” Swallows CEO Sipho Xulu said when quizzed by KickOff.com on the move.
“Yes it's true, these boys have been always here on trial. So yesterday we decided to sign them before they disappear. At the moment we are signing players on a season-long deal.
“Reason I signed them is because we don't have what they've got. In fact it's not two, it's three. There's [Sibongiseni] Ngcobo as well, a centre-back from KZN. I have signed a spine. I'm trying to make the team's spine strong. We have strong men when it comes to scouting, we have Aaron Mokoena and Fani Madida scouting for us.”
Masina says he joined Swallows so he could start afresh but still has ambitions of returning to the PSL.
“I trained with the club for four days. I have signed for the remaining nine months. Rather than to stay the whole season not playing I thought... I can say I'm not afraid to start afresh in the NFD,” Masina explained.
“I want to fix everything, catch my breath in the next nine months... somewhere December or end of the season and go back to the PSL. In January teams want to sign players who can play now. So if you are not playing it's a problem.
“I chose Swallows because I want to be home and not be too far away. If it's an NFD team it needs to be closer to Jozi you see. Most definitely they expect goals from me to help the team to be balanced and everything. If we can just reach the playoffs.”
