The first edition of the Happydu annual youth volleyball tournament will take place at the Katutura Youth Complex this weekend.

The tournament starts on Friday and the semi-finals and finals will take place on Saturday.

The event is organised and sponsored by the Happydu Volleyball Club, made up mostly of youth from Katutura. The club targets boys and girls aged 13 to 17.

Happydu head coach Aloisius Ishitile told Nampa a number of schools have shown an interest in participating, with nine schools from Khomas and one from Erongo already registered to take part.

He said the main aim of the tournament is to develop volleyball at youth level, as the club feels youth volleyball is being sidelined.

“Most people focus on senior volleyball teams, but if we could focus on the youth right now, we will have better volleyball players in the future,” Ishitile said.

He said the tournament is also an opportunity for young people to unite and have fun, while building their volleyball careers.

Ishitile said although many new players are expected, strict rules will be observed to ensure that they leave with the necessary knowledge. He said they are struggling to find sponsors for the sports code and Happydu is currently the sole sponsor of the tournament.

Despite the lack of sponsorship, the growth of volleyball in the country is pleasing, he said.

“During my short time that I have been a volleyball coach, I have toured the country and observed that many people are now playing the sport, compared to when I was young,” Ishitile added.
