VMSIX have successfully managed to get local Acapella to cross over onto the mainstream and have been showered with praise and accolades.
Their new album, however, sounds like a completely new mission - a mission to provide some sort of comfort and inspiration to a society that is at odds with itself.
Their latest offering Ekundungu speaks to society, almost begging us to remain in prayer.
The tragic death of a toddler in police holding cells last week has sent shockwaves throughout Namibia, and this album provides comfort for anyone dealing with any kind of loss.
Their song, “The Sweet Hour of Prayer’, speaks to the heart. It reminds a society that feels forsaken that our God is faithful and true.
Another highlight on the album is ‘I’ll Hear Your Voice’, with its soothing vocals.
‘Sweet Sweet Spirit’ is another dose of inspirational music.
It fills one with faith, even when everything around you is falling apart.
Their version of ‘Amazing Grace’ is one of my favourites on the album.
There have been many versions of this popular hymn, and VMSIX offers a deeply personal and touching rendition of it.
On most versions, you hear singers showing of their vocal range by belting it out.
However, with their low range and serenity, VMSIX almost makes the ancient hymn sound brand new.
On the songs ‘Outra Vez’ and ‘Move Over’, the group shows that despite growing up they are still young at heart.
The songs are exciting and quirky.
‘Move Over’ tells the devil to move, as there is no place for him here. It’s hard not to dance to this song.
Never before has an Acapella song coaxed me to roll my neck and shoulders to its rhythm.
With ‘Rock River’ they show that they aren’t just talented singers, but good lyricists as well.
It’s a cohesive song about struggle and faith. It says there is a greater being that will catch us when we fall.
The album closes with the song ‘Glory To Our Land’.
It’s almost like a curtain call to a story of struggle and triumph.
“And in my heart I know, He can make a change for tomorrow. All we need to do is love one another,†they sing.
What is most exciting about this album is that you don’t realise at all that there are no musical instruments involved and the group simply uses their voices to create soothing sounds. This album has the ability to touch hearts that ache for peace.
