Uushona gets top ranking

Namibia’s welterweight boxer Bethuel ‘Tyson’ Uushona inched closer to getting a world title fight as he is now ranked number one in his division by the WBO. This was revealed when the WBO’s ranking for April was released over the weekend with the Namibian now ranked higher than American stars, Adrien ‘The Problem’ Broner and Timothy Bradley, who lost his world title belt to Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao earlier this month. Uushona’s trainer Tobias Nashilongo expressed his excitement about the news with Namibian Sun via a telephonic interview on Sunday. “This is very good news for us as a team,” he said. “This means that Tyson will be able to get an opportunity to become a contender for a world title. Since he is number one, he is set to be the next to challenge the champion. “If not, then people will ask why he is jumped.” Uushona is set to defend his WBO Africa title on May 17 in Omuthiya when he takes on Patrick Allotey from Ghana. Nashilongo stated that his fighter is primed and ready to continue making inroads in one of the most lucrative divisions in boxing. “We are ready and we have no doubt that he can make it even though his opponent has a good record,” he said. Other Namibians who are doing well on the WBO ranking include Vikapita ‘Beastmaster’ Meroro, who is ranked number two in the light heavyweight division, and Paulus ‘The Hitman’ Moses, who is also second in the lightweight category. Paulus ‘The Rock’ Ambunda, who recently made the jump to light featherweight, is still rated fifth in the bantamweight division.
