Namibian footballer Itamunua Keimuine, who plays in the Ethiopian Premier League, says there is so much confusion and uncertainty in his camp after the league was suspended following the coronavirus outbreak.
The Dire Dawa City goal-poacher hopes that the virus that has brought all sport activities to a halt will be contained and curbed.
“To be honest, they suspended the league for 15 days and it’s all just confusing times for us.
“You do not know what is going to happen, and if they suspend the league indefinitely, what is going to happen to our contracts?
“As individuals, we are trying to stay on the safe side and just be hopeful,” Keimuine said.
The culture
Keimuine said the Ethiopian culture makes it even more difficult to maintain social distancing.
“People here have a traditional way of greeting each other by handshakes and stuff.
“I think the situation can get worse if the virus manages to increase here because of the lifestyle and traditions of people.
“We as a club are however trying our best to maintain cleanliness and to avoid contracting the virus by all possible ways.”
Respecting guidelines
The player further revealed that they have not been in self-quarantine as is the case in most countries in the world.
Dire Dawa City is still hosting training sessions despite the outbreak, which has reached the African continent after its first case was reported in Wuhan, China.
“Well, we are trying to follow the guidelines set by the World Health Organisation.
“We are however still in training and also not in self-isolation and I do not know why, but we’re keeping the faith as players,” Keimuine added.
The 15-day suspension period for the leagues and schools in Ethiopia is set to end on Sunday.
As things stand, schools and many other activities in the country have been put on hold in an attempt to curb the spread of the deadly virus.
