Unam rugby team marches on

The Walvis Bay side failed to impress when they came up against the university team. UNAM scored and converted all eight tries to claim two bonus points, while Wanderers scored two tries, converted one and added two penalties. Kudus struggled to contain a rampant Unam team who made several changes to their usual starting line-up in what their coach Johan Diergaardt termed preparation for the future.Camlo Martin scored a hat-trick of tries with Helarius Kisting, Milaan Van Wyk, Romanzo Lento, Kamie Mieze and substitute full-back Lorenso Louis chipping in with one try apiece.Denver Merurua converted six of the eight tries, while Kisting converted the other two.For Kudus Steven Carlton and Paulo Andrews scored three tries, while the conversions and penalties were from Ulriato Lawrence.The win puts the university team at a comfortable position of retaining their title for the third time in row, as they remain the only unbeaten team on the log.Kudus coach Zane Jansen paid tribute to Unam, saying they played typical student rugby of attacking all-out, which unsettled his team.“We could not manage to counter them in the first half, but when we reorganised our defence in the second half, it went well as we kept them out for a long period,” he said.UNAM coach Diergaardt said his team played well in the first half, but changes in the second half changed the complexion of the game.“We made some changes because our backline will miss a few players in the next two or three weeks. We wanted to give some of the potential replacements some game time so they can get into the rhythm,” he said.He added that because of their dominance, Unam is now giving themselves small challenges to take their game to another level.“With all due respect to all the other teams, we have to find motivation within ourselves, like setting score targets for each half. Today we said we must get a bonus point in the first half and we did that,” he added. In other games played on Saturday, Wanderers lost away to Walvis Bay by 22 points to 15, while Western Suburbs beat Rehoboth by 25 points to 10 at Suburbs Park in Windhoek and United beat Falcons 15-07.
