Unam defy the odds

The University of Namibia (Unam) FC and African Stars will meet in the final of the 2018 Debmarine Namibia Cup. This after both clubs emerged victorious in the semi-finals of the competition on Saturday. Unam and Stars will contest the second final of the Debmarine Namibia Cup on 19 May, at a venue still to be determined by the organising committee.Unam played in the first semi-final match at a cool Sam Nujoma Stadium, taking on Black Africa. After a goalless first half it was Black Africa substitute Mccarthey Naweseb who broke the deadlock with a fine finish from close range and with BA destined for victory. Tara Katupose headed Unam back into the contest and eventually into extra time. The two sides were more cautious in the extra 30 minutes and after 120 minutes of exciting football, Unam and BA had to be divided by a shootout.Emilio Martin and Derl Goagoseb scored for BA to keep them alive before Brave Warriors defender Vitapi Ngaruka missed his kick to give Unam the advantage. Captain Heinrich Isaacks, Veno Tjikundi and Man of the Match Marcel Papama had scored for Unam and so did Lebbeus Mwatilefu. Wendell Rudath scored for BA and Katupose scored to make 5-3 for Unam and a first –ever place in the final of the Namibia Football Association (NFA) Flagship competition for the Clever Boys. In the second game of the day, Civics and African Stars locked horns for a place in the final to face Unam and when Edwin Korukuve gave Stars the lead earlier on, the game promised more and it was 1-1 before halftime as Civics striker Gunzu Salazar bundled the ball home past the hapless Ratanda Mbazuvara in the Stars' goal. The exciting game was past-paced with a few goal-mouth action to write home about, and in the end 90 minutes came and went and down into extra time and with penalties looming, Brave Warriors captain Ronald Ketjijere produced the deceive punch that sent Stars through to the final. Civics conceded a corner kick and after they failed to clear their lines, the ball felt kindly to the expectant Ketjijere who showed class and technique as he thundered one into the inside of the cross bar and onto the back of the net on 118 minutes to break the Civilians' hearts.
