Ulenga allegedly in accident on B1 road
OTJIWARONGONAMPA
Congress of Democrats (CoD) president Ben Ulenga allegedly narrowly escaped death on Sunday morning after a car he was travelling in hit a stationary truck on the B1 road.
Deputy Commissioner Moses Khairabeb of the Otjozondjupa police said the accident occurred at around 02:00 on Sunday morning.
Khairabeb said the Jeep Cherokee had been travelling south from the direction of Otjiwarongo to Okahandja.
He could not confirm that this vehicle belongs to Ulenga, saying that the CoD president himself was not at the scene of the accident when the police got there, nor did he open a case with the police.
Nampa nonetheless understands that Ulenga was the person who informed the police and the tow-in service about the accident.
"At approximately 60 kilometres from Otjiwarongo to Okahandja, it is alleged there was a truck parked in the left lane of the road after its right front tyre burst. A Jeep Cherokee alleged to have carried him [Ulenga] came from the Otjiwarongo side and crashed into it," Khairabeb said.
It is alleged that the truck driver had placed a reflective triangle in the road to warn other road users of the road hazard. However, when members of the police's traffic department arrived at the accident scene, the triangle was found broken into pieces and swept off the road.
Efforts to call Ulenga on his cellphone yesterday proved futile as he was said to have left the country on Sunday.
The Jeep Cherokee has been left at a scrap yard in Otjiwarongo.
