Uerikua calls for better sports facilities

NAMPAThe governor of the Otjozondjupa Region, James Uerikua, has once again called on the government to build sports facilities in his region so that people can be empowered through sports.Uerikua, who in the past said his region lacked proper sports facilities, reiterated this during the opening ceremony of the MTC Namibia Youth Games at the National Youth Service Centre at Rietfontein on Wednesday night.He said he had been to seven constituencies in his region and during his engagements with young people their main concern was a lack of sports facilities.“Honourable minister of sport, youth and national service [Agnes Tjongarero], I want to request something that needs to be addressed and that is lack of sports facilities and equipment and of course the support towards sports activities,” he said.He added that the government and his office must start strengthening their support of sports activities.“We need to up our game as far as budgeting and funding is concerned towards the provision of equitable and proper sport facilities so that our people can be given an opportunity to execute whatever [sport activity] they want,” said Uerikua .He said it is only through sports that people can discover their talent and contribute positively to their society.During her speech, Tjongarero said she was happy to see that two of her directorates were working well together in the best interest of the youth.“This facility we are currently using belongs to the National Youth Service and the Directorate of Sports has been accommodated here, which shows that in the future this type of collaboration will grow our ministry,” she said.Tjongarero said the ministry alone cannot develop infrastructure, and called on businesses to come on board and help the government in realising their dream of sports development in the country.“Currently, the government is using most of its resources to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, that's why I am calling on more sponsors to come on board and help in hosting these types of competitions,” she said.She also called on all regions to start utilising the facilities at the Rietfontein centre as it belongs to all Namibians.
