TransNamib employee killed in train crash
TransNamib crew member died in an explosion following a train accident that occurred at Kalkveld this past Saturday.
According to TransNamib, a freight train was involved in an accident at Kalkfeld at 19:10 on Saturday.
The train was en-route from Kranzberg to Otjiwarongo when it collided with stationary rail tankers at the Kalkveld Station intersection.
The collision resulted in an explosion.
A statement issued by TransNamib said one of the two crew members on board died on the spot.
His name cannot be released until his next of kin has been informed. The other employee is in a critical condition at the Otjiwarongo State Hospital.
Rail traffic between Kranzberg and Otjiwarongo has been suspended until the line is cleared.
TransNamib has requested customers to exercise patience with the anticipated delays in deliveries, as a result of the disruption in operations. Emergency response and accident investigation teams are at the scene to determine the cause of accident, assess losses, damages suffered and to speedily restore operations to normal.
