Tourism expo a roaring success

The ever-popular Namibia Tourism Expo and Motorshow, came to an end on Saturday night at the showgrounds in Windhoek. As is procedure every year, thousands flock to the event which is viewed not only as one of the most important on the Windhoek social calendar, but also for tourism in the country and region as well as the best place to sample new wines and great food. Numbers were slightly down this year, with the total visitors just short of 21 000 at 20 999. This is a 6% drop on the previous year.

The theme of this year’s expo was ‘Safe travel’ which was lauded by both government and the private sector as critical for the continued growth of Namibia’s tourism sector. On Wednesday evening, the Wilderness Safaris Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp took the Responsible Tourism Award in this regard. According to the CEO of Namibia Media Holdings, Albe Botha, said, “We need to change our attitude on road safety or start locking people away for longer periods in jail. We cannot continue on the same road and think that death will not visit us more often as a nation.”

The 180-plus exhibitors from here and elsewhere went all out with their stands but sadly, there was no platinum winner this year. Four gold awards were handed out and the winners here were SABMiller Namibia, Gondwana Collection, Erongo Mountain Winery and Pernod Ricard. A total of 12 silver awards were given to Namibia Breweries, Scottish Leader, die Vleisraad, Shoprite/Checkers, 3 Ships, Bain's, Durbanville Hills, Cymot, The Belgian Choclatique, Venture Publications, Amarula and Nedbank Namibia. There were 48 bronze stand winners.

Wildaker Guest Farm near Grootfontein won the Tourismus Tourist establishment award and the most popular stand at the expo was the stand created by the Lüderitz Town Council. The most popular tourism stand winner was nabbed by the Safari Hotel and for cars, it was the Novel Motor Company. The most popular tourism supplier stand winner was Belgian Choclatique and the most popular international stand winner was the India High Commission. More than 5 000 votes were cast for the most popular stand.
