TotalEnergies reaffirms its commitment to road safety

Staff reporter Road safety has become an increasingly serious public health concern for non-communicable deaths.Globally, 3 700 people die every day on the world’s roads, highways and byways. What is even more shocking is that statistics from the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund of Namibia show that in 2018, Namibia ranked first in Africa in road accidents, with more than 19 000 occurring every year, leaving 700 dead and 7 000 others disabled. As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting safety on our country’s roads, TotalEnergies Namibia has once again availed its services to ensure customers, its staff and stakeholders across the country enjoy safe travels.Managing director of TotalEnergies Namibia Naftal Kakwambi shared their view of why road safety is so important.“Safety is actually our core value and though as an organisation we have a number of values, we believe it is so important that we actually refer to it as our licence to operate,” he said during a recent interview.“TotalEnergies has been part and parcel of the national road safety campaign for some time now and is committed to supporting this initiative into the future. After all the years we have been part of it, we still feel that we must contribute to keeping our roads safe for our clients, stakeholders and the public at large,” he added.Fuelling a safer futureDue to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, its planned engagements could not materialise last year, but this has not taken away from TotalEnergies’ commitment to helping to make the country’s road safer.“We know that many people travel for business and leisure. Bearing in mind the excellent quality of our road network, the statistics of the high number on accidents and lives lost are very worrying, especially given the tremendous loss of life we’ve experienced due to the coronavirus,” Kakwambi explained.“We regard the safety of our employees, the communities we operate in and the public at large as a key enabler for the sustainability and growth of our business. So, we view our participation in promoting road safety efforts as much more than just being a responsible corporate citizen,” he said.Totally committedThe TotalEnergies teams across the country will be doubling their efforts to ensure travellers and their vehicles receive the best service possible to ensure that everyone visiting a TotalEnergies forecourt are fit, and so too the drivers and passengers are fit to travel and are sensitised about the importance of safe and considerate road usage.“As a responsible oil company, we aim to make a lasting social and economic impact in the country through continued investment in new locations and upgrading existing ones, so that we can help create employment and positive spin-offs through our participation in the local market.“This is also why we strongly support road safety in the country, as without our clientele we would not be able to do business. We implore all Namibians, and even visiting road users, to do their part to keep our roads accident-free,” Kakwambi said.
