'The Heat' too hot for Izinyoka
South African boxer Chris ''The Heat'' van Heerden claimed the vacant WBA Pan-African Welterweight title after beating Sacky ''Izinyoka'' Shikukutu on Sunday.
Namibia''s Sacky ''Izinyoka'' Shikukutu was only left with one choice of knocking out the South African Chris ''The Heat'' van Heerden but that did not happen, seeing him leave the ring without a title.
Shikukutu and Van Heerden exchanged blows for the vacant WBA Pan-African Welterweight title in South Africa on Saturday.
Although the Namibian started off well with Van Heerden also responding with a combination of blows, Shikukutu sustained a cut close to his left eye in the fourth round.
Van Heerden had Shikukutu on the ropes but the Namibian showed his boxing skills by responding with a combination of left and right hooks.
Although Van Heerden seem to have changed his style of boxing in the seventh round, the Namibian continued with the style that he started with, landing one-two punches and moving out.
The seemingly relaxed Shikukutu continued to pressure Van Heerden, landing some well-taken punches.
Shikukutu''s corner seemed unconvinced by their boxer''s confidence as they shouted: “You need to box, give the guy pressure, that is the only way you can win this. You can make it Sacky, just fight.”
Van Heerden''s corner also spared no words for their boxer as they reminded him of the cut Shikukutu sustained.
As the last rounds were drawing closer, and an increase in tempo and style of boxing, the South Africa sustained a cut close to his eye as well, with Shikukutu delivering more punches.
That was however not sufficient to earn him the title as the judges scored the fight 117-111, 117-111 and 118-110 in favour of Van Heerden.
Shikukutu has a record of 22 wins, four losses and one draw with 13 of the 22 wins coming via knockout, and has won five of his last six fights. Van Heerden has 25 wins, (12 via knockout), two losses (one via knockout) and one draw. He also has won five of his last six fights.
