The effect of Covid-19 on School Events
Martin Edward
The pandemic has brought many problems and disruptions. Affecting our economy and educational system. It has also disrupted and stopped events from happening this year and ever since it came. It affected the school negatively due to strict regulations and number of people that attended events. Events like fundraising, fundays, class tournaments not to mention events that could not take place.
With Covid-19 surprises, we all put our safety first. As a school Ella Du Plessis, we can’t even host the awards ceremony to award our most hardworking learners. That is only because one term was complete and the farewell party for grade 11, the only time left is to study. We cannot make promises for the event to take place. The most effected events were the parent meetings and parent evening which is for feedback to the parents. The latter a\\drives fear in the learners and encourages them to study. Analysis show that learners progress and effort was also affected by this. Which in turn affected the school so much with no parental involvement and learners’ performances dropped. They also lost interest in their studies due to the one day on and off situation.
Analysis also shows that there was a 60% drop in the school financial system. The finance department mentioned that money that was supposed to be used on events and projects was used on Covid-19 materials instead, like soap, sanitizers. Usually the school will sell items at events with learners that buys. This money is then used for school development materials and their projects. Without events the school management will find it hard to raise funds. They will have to come up with other ways to raise funds which is giving them more responsibilities. The school management was planning a renovation project but because of the lack of funds our toilets will remain in their old condition says, Mrs. Mutota a life-skills and a supporter of the entertainment department.
Entertainment is also needed by learners. It reduces stress from studying and relaxes your mind. It takes pressure off school work since you get to think and do new things. If it was not for Covid-19 our school could have achieved a lot of projects. The relationship between regional teachers and parents lost value which affected the learners’ efforts to work hard.
Covid-19 is still amidst us so I prefer safety than enjoyment. Learners should use their other ways of relaxing like listening to music or watching tv shows.
