The concern of keeping a business alive amidst covid-19

Keeping a small-scale business afloat during the pandemic has not only become a great concern, but an even greater responsibility for owners. Covid-19 came with a great number of effects which forced many to think outside the box.
Different businesses operate on different terms and definitely have different aims. All businesses however set targets. Both service- and product-based businesses have been affected by Covid-19 in one way or another. These effects can be expressed by different business owners.
The founder of Poiyah Media, Ilke Platt, says Covid-19 has allowed business owners to see if they are waterproof.
“This is to see if we are resistant towards the heavy rains to forcefully close our businesses. We can test this by the usage of social media, capacity and resources within the company as well as the adaptability of the company. We must check not to have water leakages,” she said.
Platt added that Covid-19 has allowed many organisations to embrace new ways of operating.
The Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) conducted a survey on the effect of Covid-19 on a number of selected businesses in Namibia. The survey was designed as an experimental study aimed at providing an early indicator of the business impact resulting from Covid-19 during the stage one of the states of emergency.
The survey revealed that 96.5% of businesses that responded were adversely affected by the pandemic. This is a continuous problem which may persist in the coming months as well.
The survey further revealed that 50% of the businesses indicated that they traded on a partial basis while 25.2% were temporarily closed. The majority of operating businesses have indicated a reduction in local customer demand as the most common current and future effect experienced by 68.8% and 65.1% of the businesses.
These many figures exist as proof that the effect of Covid-19 has been tremendous. The closure and reduction of profit amounts is saddening to witness over long periods of time. Even with a good plan in place, external influence may come around to alter the plans you have set in place. The only thing that would matter is whether you had alternatives. Alternatives, locally known as Plan Bs, come in handy to sustain a business when rocky roads approach.
