Team Namibia strikes gold
Team Namibia scooped 68 medals at the recently ended AUSC Region Five karate championships in Gaborone.
The Namibian national karate team delivered electrifying performances at the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region Five karate champs in Gaborone, Botswana, winning 10 gold, 19 silver and 39 bronze medals, and placing third overall out of seven countries.
The championships took place on 25 and 26 May.
In recent years, Namibian karate has captured the attention of their counterparts from other nations and has showed great improvement within the region - undoubtedly becoming a force to be reckoned with.
Freddy Mwiya Jr said he had a great competition and looks forward to what is to come.
National team coaches, Sensei De Wet Moolman and Sensei Llewellyn Manale are tremendously proud of the team's performance and are excited about their prospects at upcoming tournaments.
“The weekend's participation forms part of our roadmap to major tournaments within the foreseeable future. Preparations are currently underway for our participation in the African championships to be held later this year in Rwanda, as well the African Youth Games to be held in Algeria.
“Amongst our young athletes are youth Olympic Games hopefuls like Freddy Mwiya Jr, who has already been successful internationally numerous times,” Sensei Moolman said.

Herman van Zyl (men under-21, 84kg), Ronja Porteus (girls u-12 and 13, 42kg), Michelle Tjimuku (girls junior, 48kg), Erensha Koopman (girls 10 to 11, 45kg, Jamaal Simaraa (boys junior, 61kg, Freddy Mwiya Jr (boys junior, 68kg), Nathan Leopoldt (boys 12 and 13, 55kg-plus), Joshua Kunneke (boys 14 to 15, 70kg), Julio Mwiya (boys 12 to 13, 40kg) and Joaquin Nel (boys 10 to 11, 40kg).
