Talk of the town
Mshasho and Shilongo Leather Works have been making waves for the past two weeks, as a sizzling collaboration takes both proudly Namibian brands to new heights.
Mshasho boss, The Dogg, says the idea of collaborating his with Shilongo Leather Works was ignited last year, when he noticed youth embracing the local brand more and more.
To cut a long story short, the Mshasho clothing brand owner decided to team up with the manufacturers, and about two weeks ago, the thought became a reality.
“I believe this is the perfect timing. as most of my projects are on hold and I can now focus on making the most of this collaboration. Shilongo Leather Works does not normally do this, but I'm very happy that they gave me the opportunity,” The Dogg said.
The musician, who recently held his last concert, said the partnership is more than just about him putting his name on the shoes.
“Slapping on something is about buying a T-shirt and printing your brand on it. This is different. The shoes are done from scratch and they are made according to the client's specifications.”
So far, more than 40 pairs of shoes that sell for N$650 per pair have been ordered and the artist says this is an indication that the partnership is great for both brands.
The Dogg says the collaboration is not “limited edition” and his fans are in for more than just shoes.
He says he is looking to work with other leather manufactures to make more products.
“It's an amazing feeling and it makes me feel like I should do more with the brand. It's refreshing for fans too; we have had the caps and shirts for a while, so something new is always welcomed,” he said.
The Dogg made it clear his partnership with Shilongo Leather Works, which has been in the industry for over 30 years, is not an endorsement, but rather two brands adding value to their already existing businesses.
“Fashion and entertainment works very well together, so I'm just using this opportunity while I have the power. I don't have the means to produce the product on my own; that's why I teamed up with a business that can, and we both win,” said The Dogg
The Shukifa Kwii singer shut down naysayers on social media, who are saying the collaboration is not creative and unnecessary. He said people always talk.
He also bashed certain people who he claims are running to Shilongo Leather Works and wanting the same work done for their brands, saying that they are being unfair.
“This partnership is only two weeks old and yet people are already copying. Can't they at least wait a year or two for me to make a profit and then do the same?
“The people doing this are even close to me. Why don't they approach me first? When someone is talking about you, then something is right, so if it's working for me and the people buying it, why should I bother with those that are criticising?” he questioned.
The Dogg says he will be focusing more on his clothing line.
The future, according to him, is bright, but the government needs to step in and see what the creative industry is doing and support locals.
