Suspected ivory dealers denied bail
Two men who allegedly tried to sell two elephant tusks to undercover policemen were denied bail by the Walvis Bay Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Dirk Vermeulen (51) and Edgar Clark (41) were charged with possession of a controlled wildlife product and trading in controlled wildlife products.
They were arrested on Saturday afternoon during a sting operation at Gracemere Flats in the Fairways area of Walvis Bay.
They appeared before the Walvis Bay Magistrate's Court on Monday, where Magistrate John Sindano remanded them in custody.
State prosecutor Tuihaleni Hilikuete opposed bail, citing the seriousness of the offence.
“A charge like this carries a fine of N$200 000 or 20 years' imprisonment,” Hilikuete said.
The two accused are represented by Eugene Thomas Legal Practitioners.
The case was postponed to 19 September for further investigation and for the accused to lodge a formal bail application.
