Submission of drought claims extended

The due date for submitting claims for drought mitigation measures has been extended to 6 April.

The agriculture ministry yesterday said only new claims for transactions done from 1 April 2019 to 6 March this year will be accepted.

The claims must be under the Livestock Marketing Incentive Scheme, the animal feed subsidy and the lease of grazing and transport subsidy for drought-affected communities.

“All the claims must be legitimate and accompanied by all the mandatory supporting documents required,” the ministry said.

These documents include a certified copy of the applicant's identity document, a FANMEAT card, a bank confirmation letter, animal movement permits, a lease agreement for grazing and transport, and a confirmation letter from the relevant traditional authority where necessary. Latest herd statements and proof of transactions must also be included.

“In addition, farmers should take note that bank confirmation letters and the proof of transactions must be in the name of the applicant.”

The ministry recently said that more than N$2.7 million had been paid out to farmers under different drought subsidies.

It said 5 383 claims under the Livestock Marketing Incentive Scheme had been received from farmers. Of these, 3 031 claims, valued at N$18.6 million, were paid.

According to the ministry the remaining 2 353 claims are still being processed for payment.

Under the animal feed subsidy, 4 510 claims were received, of which 1 440 claims valued at N$1.6 million were paid. The remaining 3 070 claims are being processed.

Furthermore, a total of 204 claims under the lease of grazing and transport subsidy, valued at more than N$716 500, were paid out.
