Street-milers to invade Omaruru

The seventh edition of the annual Omaruru Street Mile is set to attract over 1 000 participants.Omaruru will host the annual competition this coming weekend and runners from as far afield as Botswana will be participating.They will take on a 1.6km street run in different categories.“This event has been accredited by the IAAF because we flew someone in from South Africa to get the course measured.“I would like to acknowledge the support of Shield Namibia/Powersave, who has injected a lot of money towards this event.“I would also like to thank all the other sponsors on board for this prestigious event,” organiser Berthold Karumendu said. Long-term sponsor Shield Namibia/Powersave Wholesale has committed over N$90 000 towards the hosting of the event, while Pasta Polana pledged N$25 000 in cash and pasta worth N$6 000. FNB Karibib is giving N$10 000, while Windhoek Light has provided some materials to be used at the event. Coca-Cola Namibia remains the main drinks sponsor.Armand Steyn of Shield Namibia/Powersave Wholesale expressed excitement at the launch of the event. “It was an extremely difficult year, if you look back at the economic situation, because it sometimes makes it difficult to get involved in things like we are going to do this weekend.“Still, we are excited to be part of it, because we know that it is in good hands from an arrangement point of view and obviously because of the way Omaruru received us last year,” Steyn said. The main races of the day will be the senior men and women's categories (20 to 39 years). Winners in this category will each walk away with N$5 000, while the runners-up take home N$3 000 each. Bronze medallists get N$2 000. The gold medallists in the junior men and women's category will each win N$3 000. The silver medallists will get N$2 000 each, while the third-place finishers will be compensated with N$1 000 each for their efforts. Veterans between the ages of 40 and 49 will also be in action in both the male and female categories. The winners will receive N$3 000 each and gold medals, while silver medallists will each get N$2 000 and N$1 000 each will go to the bronze medallists.Masters aged over 50 years will also be competing. The male and female masters winners will each walk away with N$1 500. Second-place finishers will N$1 000, with N$700 up for grabs for third place.Ministry of sport director Jo-Ann Manuel lauded Karumendu for his hard work.“Let me thank Karumendu for never giving up, because I remember the first street mile and I never imagined it will come this far.“The money in this country is not there, but we have to deliver and make sure that sponsors support sport in this country,” Manuel added. Primary school boys and girls aged between 10 and 13 will also be rewarded for their performances.Registration for the primary and junior categories is free, while the senior categories registration costs N$40.
