Stay safe this festive season

ELLANIE SMITWINDHOEKThe police have issued safety tips to ensure the security of members of the public, and their homes, during the festive season.According to the police, statistics show that there is a significant increase in property crimes during holiday periods. When people go on holiday, criminals use the opportunity to break into their empty homes. To deter burglars, the police say it is important to know your neighbours and build a trust relationship with them.“Install security gates or barriers at your outside doors and keep them locked at all times.” Another tip is to make provision for adequate outside lighting, but always remember to switch the lights off in the morning, because outdoor lights that are on during the day are a clear indication that the occupants are not at home.“Never leave your garage door open when you are away, since criminals will be able to notice that there is no car in the garage,” the police advise.Furthermore, people should never leave their keys under the front door carpet or in a pot plant. The police warn that thick shrubs or bushes near a window can offer a hiding place to a burglar, so clear the bushes close to your house.“Always emphasise the need for security with your domestic worker and ensure that he/she is well versed in your security measures. If your domestic worker leaves your employ, make sure that you change locks and alarm codes.”According to the police, sliding glass doors can offer easy access if they are not adequately secured, while they warn that people should not leave smaller valuable items on an inside ledge or within an arm's length of an open window.“If you intend to go away this festive season, do not publicise your holiday plans. Inform your nearest police station and your neighbours that you will be away, make sure someone empties your dustbins and lock your garage door with a strong lock.”
