SPYL unveils DC members
As the political dust settles around Swapo, its youth wing, which has witnessed fierce infighting, alleged witch-hunts, suspensions and expulsions, has announced a four-member disciplinary team.
The disciplinary committee members include local legal practitioner Joshua Kaumbi who will serve as chairperson, businessman John Walenga, Health Deputy Minister Juliet Kavetuna and Deputy Minister of Economic Planning Lucia Iipumbu as an alternate member.
The Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) Disciplinary Committee comes a few months after the expulsion of its former leader Elijah Ngurare and spokesperson Job Amupanda for support to and involvement in the Affirmative Repositioning (AR) movement.
They were expelled along with two SPYL members George Kambala and Dimbulukeni Nauyoma.
SPYL spokesperson Neville Itope said the four were identified and recommended at the last central committee (CC) meeting of the youth wing.
“They were part of the youth league and know its structures very well. They will ensure that all disciplinary matters are finalised within 90 working days,” said Itope.
He added that the last CC resolved that a ban will be placed on all suspensions of youth politicians.
“In case of members transgressing, this will be reported to the secretary of labour and justice and then to the national executive committee (NEC) and then handed over to this disciplinary committee.”
The disciplinary committee will only have 90 days to finalise its work after which any suspensions will lapse if not concluded.
Itope was recently elected as spokesperson alongside MP Veikko Nekundi who was appointed as the SPYL acting secretary.
This is despite the fact that Ngurare and Amupanda have approached the courts seeking recourse over their suspension which they feel was unfairly done.
The CC also declared Nekundi’s suspension as null and void. He was suspended by the SPYL NEC, allegedly for sowing division and undermining the youth wing
leadership.
