SPYL hopes for more youth inclusion
The recent appointment of Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) secretary Ephraim Nekongo as a member of parliament by President Hage Geingob has brought renewed hope for more appointments of young people by the nation's highest office.
This was said by SPYL secretary in the Kavango East Region, Anselm Marungu, in an interview with Nampa last Thursday.
Marungu encouraged Nekongo to find ways to address issues affecting the youth such as unemployment. He also said the new MP should address student funding by the Namibia Student Financial Assistant Fund (NSFAF), including the timeous release of non-tuition fees in order to enable students to honour responsibilities such as accommodation.
Marungu further said: “Nekongo should also fight for the transformation of the loans into grants because loans end up leaving students in debt.” Nekongo was sworn in along with Joel Kaapanda, businesswoman Martha Namundjebo-Tilahun and Swapo member Festus Marenga last Monday.
They replace former minister of justice Sacky Shanghala and fisheries minister Bernhardt Esau, who were recalled by the party after they were implicated in a corruption scandal in the fishing sector.
The other two positions were left vacant following the resignations of former youth minister Jerry Ekandjo and Sebastian Karupu.
The newly appointed members will serve for the next two months until the new parliament is inaugurated on 21 March.
