Sports community get Football4Life training

Training on a newly developed Football4Life coaching manual was offered to the sports community in Windhoek and the Ohangwena region in the first and second week of November this year. GIZ, on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has developed a football coaching manual in cooperation with all relevant partners such as Namibia Football Association (NFA), UNICEF, UNAIDS, SCORE Namibia, German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and the German Football Association (DFB). The Football4Life manual integrates HIV prevention, Sexual Reproductive Health and Life Skills into the football coaching lessons for young people. It also gives coaches a sample session on how to coach different age groups and how to gain positive youth development through football. When embedded in a pedagogical concept, sport can achieve more than just improving physical abilities: sport can be used as a tool for education, HIV and AIDS prevention and has a positive influence on the physical and psychological health of children and young people. The manual is based on a Training of Trainers (ToT) concept and 20 coaches got trained as facilitators beforehand by Skillshare International South Africa. In Windhoek, the training was held at the Special Olympics and Football for Hope Centre in Katutura and was conducted by the facilitators Raymond Vries from SCORE Namibia, Astrid Vries from the NFA and Thuba Sibanda from Physical Active Youth. In Eenhana, the training was conducted by the facilitators Ferderick Sitali who is the Regional Coordinator of the NFA Galz and Goals Programme in Ohangwena region and Matias Haundjodjo, a sport organizer from Onamunhama CS in Ondobe. The organisation and facilitation of the training was supported by the Sport for Development Expert, Donny Jurgens, from Skillshare International South Africa. Both Football4Life trainings, in Windhoek and Eenhana, received an immense attendance with over 30 coaches in both training from different fields: youth coaches, sport organizers, Physical Education teachers, community coaches and volunteers from SCORE Namibia. Julius Haixwa, a sport organiser from Concordia College stated how important this training was for him. “This training gave me the opportunity to learn more about the Sport for Development approach and how to integrate socially relevant issues into my coaching lessons for young people. “Now, I am not only a coach anymore, I am a Football4Life coach who does not only concentrate on football skills but also on the personal development of my players,” he said People with disabilities were invited to the training and provision was made for them to attend the training, such as the provision of an interpreter for a coach with hearing impairment.
