The annual Namibia Sport Awards are likely to be postponed to 2021, Namibian Sun has established.
Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) chief administrator Freddy Mwiya hinted at the postponement of the Sport Awards in an interview on the Sport Wrap show yesterday.
In April 2020, Mwiya had said that the commission had plans to postpone the awards to December.
“I think it is now more likely impossible to host the awards in October or even December with the current situation.
“The fact that most of the athletes are unlikely to be in action for most part of this year could force us to postpone the awards to next year,” Mwiya said yesterday.
The event, which awards the country's top sport performers, usually takes place in October, but hosting the ceremony this year depends on whether the coronavirus outbreak can be controlled.
Stakeholders to be engaged
Mwiya added that his decision was not final and he would first have to consult with the NSC board and all stakeholders.
“I believe that this will not be a decision I will make on my own but will definitely require input from all the parties involved in the matter before a final decision is made.”
Last year the awards were held at Ongwediva.
Marathon runner Helalia Johannes took both the MTC sports star and the sportswoman of the year awards for her phenomenal achievements.
Lifetime awards were awarded to Carol Garoes, Vetumbuavi Veii, Bravo Mufeti, Elifas Shivute, Jason Petrus and Carlos Kambaekwa for their contributions to sport over the years.
Athletics coach Robert Kaxuxeuna received the chairperson's excellence award.
