Spectacular Standard Bank Cup launched
The third edition of the Standard Bank Super Cup was launched yesterday with the organisers announcing an innovative way to decide who will play MTC Namibia Premier League (NPL) champions.
Traditionally the tournament is contested by the league winners and the national cup champions.
But since there was no national cup competition, the organisers have chosen the four teams that finished below Tigers to compete in preliminaries to decide which side will feature in the Standard Bank Super Cup.
That means Black Africa (second), Tura Magic (third), African Stars (fourth) and Mighty Gunners (fifth) will contest a mini-tournament on 13 August, with the winner then playing Tigers on 10 September.
Namibia Football Association (NFA) secretary-general Barry Rukoro said he is happy that all stakeholders were able to agree to this format.
The draw for the preliminaries was conducted yesterday. Tura Magic will play Black Africa at 11:00 while African Stars will face Mighty Gunners at 13:00 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium.
The winners of these matches will then play in a final that will take place around 17:00. An exhibition match involving the national media team and staff from the NFA is in the offing during the period between the semis and the final.
While there will be no prize money for these teams, they will receive assistance to cover their costs for taking part on the day.
The winner of the official Standard Bank Super Cup will walk away with N$500 000. The runners-up will get N$200 000.
This is the final year of Standard Bank’s sponsorship of this tournament.
“We will assess and sit down with the NFA to determine the way forward after 10 September,” said Standard Bank CEO, Vetumbuavi Mungunda regarding the possibility of an extension of their sponsorship.
