Speak out
Ever since the NAMA nomination list was released, a lot of people have been on their expressing their disappointments on social media differently. Some have been able to speak out on their platforms as artists whereas many were hiding behind others.
This just made me realise that many creative's are not fully free to express themselves. There is clearly something which is not right.
I want to believe its fear of being stigmatised by the so-called big industry dogs. These are the types of people who
are likely to say to vocal people 'ohh, so you want to say that about me? Well, you will see who will push your next song or who will produce a song for you for free'. And these are real threats that could be used against anyone.
Indeed there are bullies in the industry and these people need to be stopped. I am saying this because how else can we compete on international levels in anything when we don't want to be corrected?
I still believe that there are no ways paved for up and coming artists by those that have been in the industry for a long time because they move forward by winging it. It's not wrong because it works for them but will it work for anyone else?
I like the fact that Young T is the kind of artist who is vocal about so many issues in the industry. This week he challenged to get answers regarding the NAMAs and many felt he was stepping on the wrong toes.
When the issue was resolved and answers provided, the same people who were saying he was wrong suddenly started praising him for standing up. How hard can it be for anyone to do so? How many will join him in fighting for what is right by asking questions where needs be?
If we really want to change the game we have to learn to leave the 'I am mannered and I respect what is told to me whether I agree with it or not' attitude at home, otherwise we are just playing ourselves. I am not saying we must be rude when speaking our minds. Let's learn to listen to others, accept where we have gone wrong and correct what we can. It is our industry after all.
