SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) Namibia realises the importance to educate Namibians especially the youth on humane treatment of all animals.
Every living creature has intrinsic value and is a sentient being.
SPCA’s primary and motivating concern is the prevention of cruelty to all living creatures and the tools they use to achieve their primary goals are leadership, education and action.
To prevent cruelty to animals the public needs to change attitudes in a positive way. This is implemented and promoted through humane education.
It is important that educational work is carried out amongst adults as well as children in order to promote the understanding, appreciation of and spreading of humane principles.
According to the management of the SPCA in Windhoek education is the key to prevention. According to them, in many cases, the undoubted cruelty, neglect or suffering of an animal has not been the result of a deliberate action by the owner, but the result of ignorance and a lack of resources.
This is the reason why SPCA has initiated the annual campaign which is of utmost importance to educate our Namibian youth.
Lara Fourie, age 10 from Walvis Bay Primary School scooped the first place and was rewarded with N$1,000.00. Her painting was themed “Hands” followed by Mia Scheuerman age 11 (second place) with the painting themed “Hospital” from DHPS which earned her N$ 600.00 and lastly Clara Muhr, age 14 with the painting themed “Heart” which she got a N$ 400.00
The SPCA thanked the following schools for their respective entries: Otjiwarongo Christian School, Kaleidoscope Creations Art School, Elnatan Private School, Windhoek International School, St Pauls College, International School Walvis Bay, Deutsche Höhere Privatschule Windhoek and Walvis Bay Primary School.
