Slime’s ‘Jetpack’ unpacked

MICHAEL KAYUNDE WINDHOEK This piece discusses the impressive latest EP from trapper Slime titled ‘Jetpack’.I unpack my favourite moments and talk about why Slime and other new voices are important to the growth of the Namibian music industry. Packed with 10 tracks, this EP only features two artists, Athawise and King Kidd. I enjoy almost every song Slime included on this project. Every song is different from the one before. Slime was innovative on this EP and did not limit himself to only making trap music, which is refreshing. There is something about the three songs Athawise is featured on that has found a very special place on my daily playlists. There’s just something about Athawise that makes everything sound a little better. The songs he is featured on are ‘Like Dat’, ‘None Above’ and ‘Don’t’ Force The Sauce’. I don’t know how to explain it, but these tracks unlock a feeling of nostalgia rooted in my early stages as a music journalist. Remember when BlvcBoxx Entertainment dominated line-ups at shows? Yes, that time. The sonics evoke a feeling from a very specific time and place. The vibe makes me miss a sector of the showbusiness that we no longer have access to - shows and concerts. What incredible songs these two put together for this project! Not to initiate anything, but I believe the industry will benefit if these two one day decide to do a fully-fledged joint project. Another favourite song of mine is ‘Natulongeni’ featuring King Kidd. This is a dreamer’s song, for all those hustling and chasing their dreams. For those who just want to have fun, track seven is the soundtrack for you. Titled ‘Golden Suitcase Interlude’, Slime is literally just bragging on this song. All I can say about ‘Golden Suitcase Interlude’ is that a bunch of industry guys are going to be touched by some of the direct and indirect shots Slime is taking here. ‘Jetpack’ is such a well put together body of work. One of my favourites drops this year. Well worth the wait, honestly. ‘JetPack’ is available on all major streaming platforms.
