SKW teams dominate tennis League
The Namibia Tennis Association (NTA) league continued over the weekend with SKW emerging as the dominant force in matches played at different venues.
A total of five encounters between teams of the men's first and second league and the women’s division took place at Nampol, SKW, DTS and the Central tennis club in Olympia.
In the men’s second league encounter at SKW the visiting CTC-OTB showed a strong performance in the singles.
Veteran Werner Schuckmann raised his game when he beat the strong junior Dantago Gawanab 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 in three sets.
CTC OTB’s Bas Rijnen trounced Tevin Tait from SKW, 6-0, 6-0.
But in the remaining three doubles SKW demonstrated once more that they are a force to be watched as their sides exacted revenge for the earlier losses.
Kai Ahrens and Clifford Ngunovandu beat OTB’s Greg Chase/Dirk Stein 4-6, 6-1 10-3.
In the second doubles match, the Ahrens/Ngunovandu combination beat Schuckmann/Rijnen 4-6, 6-1, 10-7.
In the third double Gawanab/Tait thrashed Chase/Stein in straight sets.
Over at the Nampol courts, CTC A gave the hosts a hard time when they claimed a clean victory by 20 points to 0.
Nampol’s Jaco Steenkamp and Theron Steenkamp both lost their matches in straight sets to CTC A’s Elias Shikongo and Eno Akpabio respectively.
The one sided clashes also saw CTC A winning all three doubles matches.
At the Central Tennis Club, CTC B triumphed over club rival CTC C by 15 points to 5.
While CTC B’s Yed Malan lost to Risto Shikongo from CTC C, CTC B team captain Lawrence Kahindi beat Roland Van Greunen.
In the doubles, CTC B’s oldie Andreas Brueckner and 12 year youngster Johannes Swartz put up a brave fight but finally lost against Marsorry Ickua and David Ipinge.
Women’s league
The women’s league host SKW trounced CTC B by 19 points to 1.
SKWs top player Amanda van Dyk thrashed Mary Beth Gallagher 6-0, 6-0.
The theme of lopsided wins continued as Minda Kuschke beat Joyce Stals 6-0, 6-0. SKW also won in the doubles matches to complete a clean sweep.
The perfect day for SKW was sealed in the men's first league when the SKW II team, composed of the club's strongest juniors, beat host DTS by 21 points to 3. The league continues in two weeks’ time on Saturday, July 13.
