Shintama new chairperson of Omusati regional council
Along with his vow to continue where his predecessor left off, the new chairperson of the Omusati regional council, Andreas Shintama, has exploring how to mitigate the high unemployment rate in the region at the top of his agenda.
On 17 January, the regional council elected Shintama, the councillor for Ruacana Constituency, as its chairperson, replacing Modestus Amutse.
Amutse will be moving to the National Assembly following the 2019 elections, while the newly elected councillor for Oshikuku, Matheus Gabriel, and Johannes Elisa from Etayi were also elected to serve on the management committee.
In an interview with Namibian Sun, Shintama raised a number of issues he would like to pay attention to.
“We will continue where Amutse ended because we were working as a team built around political leadership and administration, delivering much-needed public services to the people of the Omusati Region and beyond. We have challenges of water availability, road networks and agriculture,” he said.
“We also have a high number of youth without jobs. We shall have a consultation with all the unemployed graduates in the region to seek the best possible alternatives to mitigate the situation. We will also consult the education ministry to make sure that things are going well.”
The Omusati regional council consists of 12 councillors, with four making up the management committee alongside the chairperson.
