School principal resigns amidst investigation
Education officials in the Omuthiya circuit and the police are investigating a case of missing money at Ekulo Senior Secondary School.
The hasty resignation of the school principal, Nahas Hamutenya, has also raised eyebrows A source informed Namibian Sun that Hamutenya resigned with immediate effect toward the end of last month after the missing N$250 000 had been reported to the police.
The education inspector for Omuthiya Circuit, Fillemon Nangolo, confirmed that they were investigating Hamutenya's resignation. “It is true that the principal tendered his urgent resignation and I am investigating the allegations. I cannot divulge further information, only that we have appointed Barnabas Nauyoma as the acting school principal,” Nangolo said.
The source said that the missing money was part of the Universal Primary Education (USE) grant paid to the school by the ministry of education.
When money started disappearing from the school's accounts, the school management reported the matter to Nangolo and a case of theft was opened by the police.
The Oshikoto police spokesperson, Inspector Ellen Nehale, says no arrest has been made yet. She could not disclose any details of the investigation.
Hamutenya could not be reached for comment.
