SA's revenge at Drag Wars

It was a beautiful day in Union Street, Walvis Bay and what better to do than burn some rubber and go head to head with South African racers? The last time drag racers from our neighbouring country came over it was a spectacle and a first for most. Racing legends braised the Namibian track and quite a few cars ran sub-11 seconds. This time around we weren’t as lucky even though dragsters displayed some glorious performances.Over 75 Namibians participated on the day, competing in both bikes and cars. Eleven South African cars and six bikes took to the street and although they weren’t all too many, they sure brought power to the saying “quality over quantity”. Sergio Hendricks, from South Africa with his 1400 Nissan Champ, clocked an astonishing 11.3 seconds, and held the record for the fastest time of the day. He was followed by his South African brother Bradley van Rooi, with his first performance Profit Kaddy at a time of 11.436 seconds. Namibia’s Morne Wagner clocked the third fastest time of the day at 11.475 seconds with his Nissan GTR. Wagner, who is a senior in the Namibian drag racing scene, is yet to connect with his GTR. Although he did quite well, he ran a slightly slower time than in Okahandja. Truth be told he is still running times slower than that specific GTR should be doing. Zafar Hoosen, from South Africa, took home the fastest time of the day title, with his Suzuki GSXR 1000, with the time of 9.3 seconds. Sharief Reynolds, South Africa clocked the second fastest time of the day at 9.6 seconds with his BMW S1000RR. In other awards, Nicole Brussel walked away with the Best Sportsman Award, Sergio Hendricks was awarded the first four-cylinder open winner (which made a colossal buzz on social media), first bandit class winner and fastest time of the day. Jason Raaff from South Africa, walked away as the winner of the fastest V8 normally aspirated class. In terms of achievements, South Africa brutally slaughtered Namibia this time but all is not yet over. Organiser Warren Thomas expressed his gratitude to all sponsors, partners, fans, supporters and all South African and Namibian racers.
