SA Rugby Sevens Academy crowned champs
The Capricorn Group Sevens Rugby tournament took place from the 27 to 29 February and was hosted by Windhoek Gymnasium Private School.
The participants included international teams, as well as under-15 and u-19 school teams.
The international teams were Namibia, Zimbabwe, Namibia Development, Botswana, Germany and South Africa Sevens Rugby Academy.
The u-19 teams were Windhoek High School, Dr Lemmer High School, Pro-Ed Academy, Gobabis Gymnasium Private School and Windhoek Gymnasium Private School.
Tournament director Wessel Kotze said the aim of the tournament is to develop it across the region and Africa and also to give schools the opportunity to see how international teams play.
Dr Lemmer High School's u-15 team won the plate final after beating Gobabis Gymnasium Private School.
Captain Eswen Lobster said he was thankful to be part the tournament. “We played a good game against Gobabis Gymnasium Private School and ended up winning,” he said. Windhoek Gymnasium Private School were the winners of the u-15 cup final after beating Windhoek High School.
The Windhoek Gymnasium u-19 team battled it out against Pro-Ed Academy and scooped the cup final title with a final score of 38-19.
The international team matches were filled with tension as all the teams were aiming for first place.
South Africa Rugby Sevens Academy took the cup after defeating Zimbabwe 31-0.
It was the first time in history that Zimbabwe reached the final.
The captain of SA Academy, Latica Nela, said the game was intense, as their opponents fought the good fight.
“Zimbabwe was physically strong and we struggled with them at the beginning, but we handled it,” Nela said. Germany scooped third after defeating Namibia Development 24-7.
