Rural safety plan inked

The police last week signed an agreement with two agricultural unions on the implementation of a rural safety plan at regional level.

The agreement was signed with the Namibia Agricultural Union (NAU) and the Namibia Emerging Commercial Farmers Union (NECFU).

According to the NAU, police inspector-general Sebastian Ndeitunga emphasised that agriculture is one of the pillars of the Namibian economy and it is important that the police protect farmers and their property.

The NAU said the rural safety plan includes police support in local crime-prevention forums.

“Regional station commanders will be tasked to handle the implementation on behalf of the police.” NAU president Piet Gouws said. Theft on farms not only affects farmers, but the economy in general, and destroys job opportunities.

According to the NAU, the signing of the agreement is a milestone in the fight against crime in rural areas.
