Kavango East health director Timea Ngwira has announced that a medical oxygen tank, which had delayed the opening of the Rundu maternity ward for the past eight months, has finally been installed and staff will soon move into the new facility.
Ngwira added that the oxygen tank will bring an end to the suffering mothers-to-be had been experiencing over the years.
Namibian Sun has published a series of articles regarding the maternity ward, which was inaugurated in November 2020 by health minister Kalumbi Shangula, but has yet to become operational.
The situation has resulted in women in Rundu and surrounding villages giving birth in the old, overcrowded maternity ward while enduring the winter cold.
The old ward has only 30 beds but often accommodates double that number, resulting in women lying on mattresses on the floor.
The new maternity ward boasts two theatres, postnatal and antenatal wards, a neonatal unit, an isolation unit, mothers’ lodges, offices and consulting rooms.
