Rundu buries 16 unclaimed bodies
The Rundu Intermediate Hospital, in conjunction with other stakeholders, yesterday buried 16 unclaimed bodies that had been kept in the hospital's mortuary since 2017.
The unclaimed bodies were of three women, two men and 11 stillborn babies.
According to the hospital's medical superintendent Joseph Mukerenge, only one of the five adults had died in the hospital.
The other four had been found dead in and around Rundu.
As for the 11 babies, Mukerenge said they were stillborn and their mothers left the hospital without giving instructions regarding burial.
He said the total number of unclaimed bodies stood at 22 - six adults and 16 stillborn babies. One of the adult bodies and five of the babies were claimed by relatives after repeated radio announcements were broadcast.
“We had to make space for other bodies and we could not keep the bodies forever,” Mukerenge said.
He added that the hospital and the police had exhausted all avenues in trying to identify the bodies.
Six coffins were donated by Angel Funeral Services as part of their corporate social responsibility.
