Every creative dreams of their work being recognised on an international level. For Armas Shivute, this dream inched a little closer last month when he received a nomination from the Sotigui Awards. tjil caught up with him.
tjil (t): Firstly, congratulations on your nomination! In what category are you nominated?
Armas Shivute (AS): Thank you very much. I am nominated for best actor in southern Africa, up against two powerful ladies from Zambia and Mozambique.
t: Where were you when you found out about this nomination and how did it make you feel?
AS: I was on mini vacation with my family at Gross Barmen. I was sitting by the pool, surfing the internet. Then at some point I went on Instagram and I saw I had some notifications. At first, I didn’t know what was really going until I read where it showed photos of the nominees and said the awards will take place in November and further details would be communicated. My nomination letter came a week later. I am still shocked but happy. The fact that my work is recognised at that level gives me goosebumps and a drive to want to go on and on.
t: What does this recognition mean for you?
AS: It means dreams can come true. I have always dreamt of being internationally recognised. I have always wanted to be an actor of note. The fact that I am nominated means that I am doing everything right and it’s an indication that somewhere someone is noticing what we do in Namibia.
t: To what do you attribute this acknowledgment to and why?
AS: I would say to those who have paved the way before us. Thanks to them, we now have these opportunities. To David [Benade] and Tim [Huebschle] for trusting me with their baby. To the cast and crew of #LandOfTheBravefilm for creating a family environment that allowed everyone to blossom. To my family and friends for understanding when I can’t be with them when I am on shooting locations. To Namibians in general. Your support inspires me every day. So, Namibia, let’s vote for this. Let’s give ourselves an early Christmas present.
