Renowned evangelist laid to rest
Efraim Angula was well known to generations of Christians, especially in northern Namibia, for his talk shows on the NBC Oshiwambo radio service.
Hundreds of people thronged to Olukonda on Saturday to bid farewell to veteran radio evangelist Efraim 'LyaAngula' Angula who died last week aged 101.
Angula was eulogised and remembered for his evangelistic zeal and his spiritual gift of healing.
ELCIN Presiding Bishop Shekutaamba Nambala told mourners that Angula was among few pastors in Namibia who were blessed with the rare healing power.
He said Angula used to pray for those suffering from evil spirits through various methods of communication. According to Nambala, Angula served in various portfolios within the church and was among the longest-serving pastors in the country.
Angula dedicated 72 years of his life to missionary work. He was ordained as pastor in 1942 at the age of 26 and was retired by the church in 1986 when he turned 70.
After retirement, Angula continued with his evangelism work, which included presenting programmes such as 'Ombiimbeli Otayi Ti Ngiini' as well as 'Kalunga Kehekeleko Alihe' on the NBC Oshiwambo radio service.
Angula also authored several books including sermon material used during church services.
“Despite his age LyaAngula was technologically advanced. When ELCIN procured the modern preaching equipment such as speakers and sound system they were given into his hands to use and take care of them.
“When mobile phones were introduced, LyaAngula used them for his evangelism work. He could send short messages to his followers praying for them,” Nambala said.
“He could pray for them on the radio and many believed that they got relief. When he stopped going to the radio station due to ageing those who believed in his healing flocked to his house in Olukonda for him to pray for them.
He was among the few priests who were gifted with this rare healing power and he has used it until his final moments.”
Angula was buried next to his wife, Maria, who died in 2015 at the age of 95. Angula is survived by seven children, 37 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
